Volunteering with Tukae Partners

Volunteering in Tanzania

With who: Tukae

  • Tukae is a small charity, which has existed since 2001. The organisation is registered as a charity in England; in Denmark it is a member of ‘Projektrådgivningen’ - an umbrella organisation for smaller NGOs.
  • In Kisaamba, the local language, Tukae means ‘let us be together’.
  • Where: The East Usambara Mountains, north east Tanzania.

  • Tukae is based at Emau Hill, near the village of Amani, and close to Amani Nature Reserve which is considered internationally important for its biodiversity and the high number of endemic species.
  • Tukae assists in the alleviation of poverty through practical action in three broad areas: Education, Health Care and Job Creation & Skill Building.

    The East Usambaras

    Doing: There are a variety of placements, all working in local communities with local people. These include:

    Education Partners (3 months minimum)

    • Assisting with the teaching of English in local state-run primary schools and in Kindergartens.
    • Trained and experienced teachers can assist with teaching, teacher development and in running development courses for teachers. – contact us for further details.

  • We have opportunities for skilled craft-persons to help develop skills in our Women’s Craft Workshop. You will need to be skilled, practical and creative and willing to work closely with a growing enterprise.

    Building Partners (6 week programme)

    We have an ongoing series of building initiatives, some to develop the resources we have at Emau Hill and thus create jobs, others providing and/or developing resources in the wider area (no prior skills needed). Projects include:

    • Building staff & volunteer accommodation, composting toilets, Learning Resource Centre.
    • Building a fabric print workshop, Men’s craft workshop, Kindergarten, Teaching Banda.
    • Refurbishing & improving Health Posts and other medical facilities.

    A variety of other opportunities occur from time to time. Currently we can use people with particular expertise in:

    • solar water heating
    • rainwater collection & storage
    • solar power
    • organic food production

    What the fees include:

    ·         Assistance with organising transport from and to Dar es Salaam airport.

    ·         Assistance with booking accommodation in DAR and Tanga.

    ·         Collection from Muheza and transport to Amani.

    ·         Full board and accommodation with at Emau Hill during your stay.

    ·         Return transport from Emau Hill to Tanga for the weekend/s.

    ·         Local transport in the area.

    ·         Half day tour of the Amani area in the East Usambaras

    ·         Transport to Muheza for departure.

    Notes:

    We are able to arrange reliable taxi drivers who will meet you, take you to accommodation we know and can recommend and obtain your bus tickets. We can recommend guide prices for these services. You should pay the drivers. this I do not quite understand

    ·         After you book with us we will send detailed instructions as well as recommendations for travel, clothing and other equipment suggestions etc.

    What the fees do not include:

    ·         Transport from Dar es Salaam airport to Dar.

    ·         Food and accommodation in Dar.

    ·         Return transportation to Dar.

    ·         Food and accommodation in Dar.

    ·         Drinks at the bar at Emau.

    ·         Transport to airport.

    Tukae and Tukae Partners reserve the right to vary what is offered in the light of changing circumstances.

    The price does not include:

    Flight, insurance, visa, drinks other than coffee and tea at Emau Hill, onward travel and personal expenses.

    We are happy to assist you in obtaining the best value available for flights, insurance etc. Please contact us.

    Tukae Partners is able and willing to assist in planning and organising, through our extensive in-country contacts, any activities you may wish to pursue after your volunteering period ends. We have many years' experience of organising and leading safaris, Kilimanjaro & Meru climbs; overland trips both within Tanzania and throughout Africa; sailing, scuba trips & courses etc. Please contact us to arrange.

    You can extend your stay for more than 3 months. The longer you stay the more you and the community benefits, and, pro rata, the less it will cost you.

    In response to a number of requests from professional and retired people we have put together a comprehensive short  programme which allows them to discover something of this little-known part of East Africa and enables them to make a contribution to the work of Tukae and gain a deeper understanding of some of the issues behind the headlines.

    Senior Programme

    Spend 3 weeks in The Eastern Usambara in the northern Tanzania combining holiday and your life-long skills helping out in our community at Emau Hill near the village of Amani in the beautiful Amani Nature Reserve.

    You will be met upon your arrival at Dar es Salaam International Airport and then transfer to Kipepeo Beach Village just 15 km south of Dar es Salaam situated on one of the most beautiful beaches in Tanzania outside of Zanzibar.

    Accommodation at Emau Hill for the next three weeks in a fully-furnished safari camp.

    The price includes:

    • Meet and greet service in Dar es Salaam. Transfer to Kipepeo Village.
    • Accommodation at Kipepeo Village for two nights inclusive of  breakfast, lunch and dinner. Drinks at own account.
    • Bus transfer to Muheza.
    • Transfer from Muheza to Emau Hill.
    • Accommodation at Emau Hill for 17 nights. Inclusive of all meals, coffee, tea and bed linen.
    • 2 nights at Peponi Beach Resort including breakfast, lunch and dinner.
    • Transfer from and to Peponi Beach Resort.
    • Transfer from Emau Hill to Tanga.
    • 1 overnight in Tanga including farewell dinner and breakfast.
