Where we work

We work with Tukae in the East Usambara Mountains, part of a swathe of mountain groups running across the north and down the eastern side of Tanzania which are known collectively as the Eastern Arc Mountains.

The East Usambaras are the smaller, much less well known, (though some would say more beautiful!) neighbours of the more developed West Usambaras. The East Usambaras are recognised as being internationally important for both the wide diversity of plant and animal species and for the number that are endemic or near-endemic.

There are trees, shrubs, plants and animals: birds, amphibians, reptiles and insects that occur nowhere else but here. Much is yet to be learned and discovered about many aspects of this very special ecosystem. As with all such areas this one is under threat from a variety of sources. Tanzania’s first Nature Reserve has been created here to help preserve some at least of this unique environment.

Tukae is in a small way assisting with this, acquiring areas of forest adjacent to Emau Hill to be conserved or rehabilitated with the eventual intention of creating a private nature reserve.

From Tukae's base at Emau Hill our Partners go to work in a variety of locations in the area.

Tukae currently works in two local primary schools, each with over 500 students, and two kindergartens. They support a number of small health posts in the area and have an on-going building programme both at Emau and in other locations the community. There are also opportunities to work with the Amani Women's Craft Workshop.
